With Mission In Mind: Olenick Diversity Team Q1 Update
At Olenick, establishing a formalized diversity program was an important part of our planning for 2018.
The Diversity team’s mission is to increase technology job opportunities for women, minorities, and veterans within our organization and with our customers and partners. As a Veteran-Owned and Diversity Supplier-designated organization, we are incredibly committed to “paying it forward” and we’ve made a tremendous amount of progress in the first quarter alone. I’m pleased to share some highlights from these efforts:
Partnerships are an important way that we realize success within our diversity and inclusion program. We’ve met so many great people and candidates through our partnerships with ComEd CONSTRUCT, YearUp, and Chicago Scholars. It has been a privilege to offer our expertise volunteering at Job Fairs, reviewing resumes, conducting mock interviews, and hosting job shadowing. In addition, this quarter we introduced a three-day IT Project Management Training component to ComEd CONSTRUCT. We created and executed 3 days of IT-related training in areas of Agile Methodology, Software Testing and Project Management led by our Olenick Consultants to 45 plus CONSTRUCT students. Our participation has given us the unique opportunity to really get to know the participants and students, and our employees are having a great time giving back to the communities.
First Rung is a new program with great potential to provide an IT career path for job seekers with a high school diploma. The key is getting into a real-world work environment and gaining an understanding of what is possible – getting to the ‘First Rung’ of the ladder of a professional career. The magic comes with the on-the-job training and mentoring which teaches foundational proficiency for these entry-level jobs.
Our Olenick Women in IT are proud to share that we have joined the Women’s Energy Network. WEN’s mission is to provide networking opportunities and foster career and leadership development for women in the energy industry. Our Belfast Office attended the inaugural ‘Women in Tech’ Conference, which brought together Northern Ireland’s leading technology companies and more than 300 delegates, both women and men. The conference provided the opportunity for women within the tech sector and female entrepreneurs to share inspirational stories of their journeys. Honoring our Veterans is a constant focus of our diversity efforts. As a veteran himself our owner and founder Tom Olenick and I are so proud that we have accelerated activities through new and existing partnerships with Hire Heroes, Wounded Warriors, Hero Bridge, and Hiring our Heroes to provide IT hiring opportunities for Veterans and their families.
Awareness and Cultural Celebrations have brought our teams from across the company together. We’ve recognized holidays and occasions celebrated by our employees from all over the world to promote a greater understanding of various cultures and values. Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as well as Black History and Women’s History Month, have been inspirational and rewarding. Early next month, we look forward to partnering with the Autism Speaks organization and being a part of World Autism Awareness Day through volunteering and other observance activities. I’m honored to be part of an organization committed to diversity and inclusion at every level and look forward to seeing the impacts of our Diversity initiatives in 2018 and beyond.
